Beauty /ˈbjuːti/- adjective : a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.

"Beauty is..." explores the perceptions people have of beauty.
This project is in collaboration with Andrea Rodriguez. It resulted in an exhibition, posters and a book.
People submitted one image to represent their vision of beauty for this participative project for 3 months.

Here were the questions we asked :
"What's the first image to come to your mind when you think about beauty ? "
"What is beauty to you ? "
We photographed the 70 participants in front of a neutral background. The image each of them gave was classified into one of the 11 themes. We received all sorts of images from a memory to an abstract image, and were surprised by how different people thoughts on beauty were.

All the portraits were presented in an exhibition we did on the 7 of March 2018,
at 32 rue du Dragon, in Paris, France

At first, when you entered, you could think of this exhibition as a collection of portraits
However, with augmented reality, you could discover a second layer to the exhibit :
when scanning their portrait you could see the image of beauty they had and in which category it was.

We intended our exhibition participants to explorediscover and actively take part in the exhibit, using new technology to integrate print, video and participative design. Our intention was to show that we are all different, and that what is beautiful for some may not be for others.

Please enjoy some of the photos from the exhibition, the posters, the videos and a few animated gifs from our exhibition.
We did an edition with the 11 visions of beauty we noticed in the submissions.
We classified the images only after receiving them all.

The 11 visions on beauty were the following:
1. ART
2. ANIMAL
3. NATURE
4. MEMORY
5. A PLACE
6. A PERSON
7. THE HUMAN BODY
8. SCIENCE
9. ABSTRACT
10. MULTIPLE
11. SOMEONE
When scanning the image you could see the vision of beauty behind the portrait of each person.
A "wall of post-it" was present at the end of the exhibit to let the viewers of the exhibition participate as well and write in a word what beauty was to them.

Surprisingly for a lot of them it was the name of their dog or cat.
Some others wrote poetic words or concepts that wouldn't have be possible through a photo.
